The First Annual Bay Area BBQ Cookoff

Announcing the First Annual Bay Area BBQ Cookoff at the Martinez Marina, Saturday October 12, 2002.

By Henry Joe Peterson, California BBQ Association

Martinez, CA -- The California BBQ Association and the City of Martinez Chamber of Commerce are proud to announce the First Annual Bay Area BBQ Cookoff, to be held Saturday, October 12 2002 at the beautiful Martinez Marina on San Francisco Bay.

Benefit for the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Proceeds for the event are going to a very worthy cause, the Martinez Boys and Girls Clubs.  This is a charity that the City of Martinez has a close association with, and CBBQA is honored to donate proceeds from the cookoff to the Boys and Girls Clubs.

It’s  a party!

The cookoff is part of the Martinez Marina Columbus Day events & parade. In addition to the annual parade, the City of Martinez is planning quite a celebration. There will be food and beverage vendors and live music.

One-day fun cook for cash prizes.

This is a CBBQA sanctioned event that which follows KCBS rules.  The competition will be a one-day cook format with

four categories: pork ribs, chicken, beef tri-tip, and "anything but." The final category, "anything but" is an open category, in which cooks can choose whatever they like --  seafood, sausage, basically anything but ribs, chicken, or tri-tip!  Teams will compete for cash prizes, trophies, ribbons, and braggin’ rights!

Hourly turn-ins.

Teams will arrive at 6 AM for set-up and meat inspection, with the cook starting at 7AM.  Judging begins at 11 a.m. with the "anything but" category, followed by chicken at Noon, tri-tip at 1:00 p.m., and finally ribs at 2:00 p.m.  Judges will tally the scores and announce the winners at 4:00 p.m.

Register today.

Registration fee is $75 per team and includes all 4 categories.  To register, email event coordinator Jeff Jones at jeff@jeffreyfoods.com or call (925)798-3019. You may also print out a registration form by clicking here "ENTRY FORM". Instructions on where to mail the form and registration fee are included on the form.

Judges and volunteers.

We are also actively recruiting KCBS Certified BBQ Judges for the event, as well as volunteers to help the event coordinator and make sure things run smoothly on the day of the cook.  If you are interested in judging or volunteering, please email event coordinator Jeff Jones at jeff@jeffreyfoods.com or call (925)798-3019.

We look forward to seeing you there!
