Harrah’s
Lake Tahoe and Harvey’s Lake Tahoe were fabulous sponsors the first
Big Chill BBQ Competition. We had 8 teams from Southern California to
Seattle Washington travel to compete at over 7,000 feet elevation and
in some really cold weather. Friday the skies were partly cloudy and
during the day the temp was at 35 degrees. Teams arrived throughout
the afternoon and started setting up. Friday evening the snow started
kicking in a little and by midnight it was coming down pretty good. By
sun up the snow stopped and there was about 2 inches of snow on the
ground around the cooking areas. But temps started to come back to
reality after hitting about 15 degrees in the early morning, by 11:30
am it was a warm 36 degrees (reality?) and then the snow started
misting again, this continued on and off the rest of Saturday. The
teams had heaters and coats and braved the two days of cold temps and
little oxygen in there fire boxes.
We
had teams with years of experience, like Mad Momma and the Kids to a
first time team Big O’s 2 Hot 4 You. Jim Minion and Jack Rogers had
brand new Eggs from Primo, there new sponsor. Rocket man took this
challenge on by himself and wore a tee shirt (no coat) all day
Saturday, while Big Moose wore cut offs the whole weekend, these two
are nuts! We had a good team of experienced KCBS judges and two great
contest reps, Jim Mehl and Frank Boyer, both pros.
Thanks
to all the teams that came up and competed and to the judges that
helped eat all that meat.
Special
thanks to Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and it’s Vice President of Marketing
Skip Sayer and Assistant Marketing Director, Jay Dee. PGI’s Jennifer
Linale, Joy Leighton, Jonathon and their teams for putting this
together on their end. Thanks to KCBS Carolyn Wells, KCBS Board of
Directors, and to KCBS’s Stephanie Wilson (what a jewel). Also to
CBBQA Gene Goycochea, John Hopkins, Frank Boyer, Jim Mehl, Bill Wight,
Rick Jones, and Henry Joe Peterson for all your help, input, and
assistance.
Thank
you,
Jeff
