The
California
Classic Barbecue Competition 2003
May 2 &3 2003, Antioch
CA
The
First Annual California Classic was a wonderful success with a 180 in
the anything "Goes Event". WE had teams from all over the State of
California
come in for the $1500 in Cash prizes and trophies. It was wet but the
teams were determined to not let the rain beat them. Friday most of the
teams were cooking by around
6pm
with a few more coming in later that night and two even started at
6
am
Saturday. We had several first time competitors as well as some veterans
of the Q. The host of the venue was the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds
and they provided a wonderful area with grass and trees and plenty of
rain. The event was sponsored by Smokehouse woods.com, Lazzari Charcoal
and Jeffbbq.com. Big O’s Too Hot for U was a husband and wife team
Alan and Mary Odor and this being there second KCBS event. Mary turned
in a pineapple upside down cake that was to die for folks. It would have
won the county fair, state fair and then some. The judges loved it so
much they gave her a 180 for the cake.
BBQ’n Fools was a solo team this event with Grant Ford cooking
on his Weber Smokey Mountain Cookers and taking the Grand Champion spot.
He earned it by placing a 1st in
Chicken, 4th in Pork Ribs, 1st in Pork, and 5th in
Brisket. Out of this World BBQ took Reserve Grand Champion and coming
all the way from Imperial
Beach
487 miles each way. We also had the Pork Assassins, Big Moose, BBQ Pit,
Rocket Men, Meatheads, Max Q, Monterey
Cooking with Talnfat, The Bayou Boys, Ric’s Righteous Ribs, Five Alarm
BBQ and LWNNA cooking this event.
It
has been several years since a KCBS sanctioned event in
Northern
California
and the teams were ready and so were the judges. We had 14 KCBS
Certified Judges and 4 non certified judges but with bbq judging
experience. Two great KCBS rep were running the contest, Frank Boyer and
Jim Mehl.
It
was wet, some wind on Friday, the grass got a little soggy on Saturday
but by the first turn in time the sun was out and the clouds were going
away. It never got cold but it was a record amount of rain for May in
that area. We had one team opt for cooking in the large pavilion, they
were the only ones dry.
Special
thanks to Smokehouse woods for supplying each team with wood and also
Lazzari Charcoal for there support with 30lb bags of mesquite for each
team. Jeff Jones of jeffbbq.com was the event promoter and wants to
thank each and every team, judge, Rep, and the KCBS office staff and
board for making this all happen and be a huge success. Without all of
you it would not have been such great fun.
