Arizona State Championship BBQ Cook-Off
Over $6,000 Cash Up For Grabs!
April 4 - 6, 2003
Tucson, AZ: Even if you’ve never stepped foot in the State of Arizona, chances are you’ve seen Old Tucson Studios. For more than 60 years it’s served as the backdrop for some 350 Hollywood Western films. From John Wayne classics like “Rio Bravo” and “McClintock” to contemporary blockbusters like “Tombstone” and “The Quick And The Dead,” Old Tucson Studios is what most people picture when they picture an Old West Town.
Today, Old Tucson Studios is much more than just a Western film set. Built in 1939 for the filming of “Arizona,” the movie studio opened its gates to the general public as a Wild West Town theme park in 1960. As a result, visitors now come from the far corners of the world to walk in the footsteps of their favorite western stars. In any given year nearly half a million people will visit the park which today features film history museums, wild west stunt shows, saloon musicals, gun fights, a working stage coach, rides for the kids, western shops, restaurants and dozens of annual special events from country music and rock concerts to – what else? - cookoffs!
This coming spring, in conjunction with its annual Rip Roarin’ Roundup tribute to cowboy tradition, Old Tucson Studios will host the KCBS sanctioned Arizona State Championship Barbecue Contest and Cook-Off. The three day event, from April 4 – 6, 2003, will welcome the best cooks from across the Southwest, Texas, California and beyond to compete for over $6,000 in cash prizes. The base fee - $150.00 – enters contestants in the four compulsory KCBS championship categories (chicken, ribs, pork & brisket) as well as providing one 20’ x 20’ cook space. Additional prize-money categories at this event include salsa, sauce, miscellaneous BBQ and dessert.
Old Tucson Studios welcomes the KCBS to its storied streets and invites America’s best BBQ cooks to test their skills, vend their vittles and compete for the $2,000 Grand Prize and for the distinction of being named 2003 Arizona State BBQ Champion. Old Tucson is also issuing a call to all KCBS certified judges interested in coming to Southern Arizona for a weekend of competition and Wild West fun.
