By Tom Chilton
Gene Goycochea and Smart & Final put together this first year contest
and did a fantastic job in spite of bad weather. Seven teams competed at
the Rose Bowl itself, next to where floats for the Rose Parade were
being decorated. We were originally scheduled to set up on a baseball
diamond with tents already set up, but the rain made the field muddy so
the organizers improvised and we set up along the side of a road next to
a park. The competitors' response to the situation was not to whine and
complain, but to get on with what we were there for - to cook BBQ and
compete.
There were torrential downpours
and a hail storm during the night, but nobody let it dampen their spirit
or enthusiasm. We had a cook's dinner and the cook's meeting was held up
a little because the cassette player wouldn't work because it was wet.
Keeping to the spirit of the event, Todd Eves improvised a solution and
played the KCBS CD on his laptop computer. We had the meeting in Brent
Walton's site, nicknamed "A River Runs Through It" for obvious reasons.
All in all, this was one of the
better competitions I've been to, and I really hope they have it again
next year. Again, a big thanks to Gene Goycochea and Smart & Final for
putting it together, and congratulations to all the teams who showed
their love of the 'Q by coming out and competing. Also, big
congratulations to Brent Walton and Qn4U on his unprecedented third
consecutive California Grand Championship. Brent is the Tiger Woods of
California BBQ.
