Here’s your opportunity to compete with the world’s best barbeque teams in the
World Barbecue Association’s upcoming 4th
World Barbecue Championships July 6, 2002 and the Kansas City BBQ Society’s Surf
& Turf California State Championship BBQ Contest July 5 both in beautiful
Imperial Beach, California.
World Barbecue Association’s 4th
World Barbecue Championships:
BBQ teams and judges from
around the world will be meeting July 6, 2002 in Imperial Beach for the World
Barbecue Association’s 4th World
Barbecue Championships. Joining the
teams and judges in Imperial Beach will be guests and media from all over the
world.
The World Barbecue Association
rules were created to assure fair and equal judging and therefore require the
number of judges from each country to be proportional to the number of teams
from each country. All judges will
be certified as official WBBQA Judges before the event
This is an authentic world
championship contest, the teams, judges, guests, media representatives and
atmosphere will make Imperial Beach truly a global community during the three
day contest and this event the Olympics of BBQ!
Kansas City BBQ Society’s Surf & Turf California State Championship:
Most of the teams coming to
Imperial Beach for the World Barbecue Association’s 4th
World Barbecue Championships will also be competing in the Kansas City
BBQ Society sanctioned Surf & Turf California State Championship BBQ contest
which will be on Friday, July 5 at the same location.
This contest is a California State Championship, and the Grand Champion
will receive an automatic invitation to compete in the 2002 American Royal
Invitational and will be entered into the draw for the 2002 Jack Daniels
Invitational.
Imperial Beach, California:
Imperial Beach is just south
of San Diego adjacent to Baja, Mexico and is the most southwestern city in the
United States of America. Blessed
with the most BBQ friendly weather on the planet, Imperial Beach is a lovely and
quaint beachside resort community close to many attractions including the
bullfights and shopping in Tijuana, the San Diego Zoo, Sea World and all that
adjacent San Diego has to offer as well as being only a two hour drive from
Disneyland and other Southern California attractions.

Thursday July 4, 2002
Teams competing in the
Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned Surf & Turf
California State Championship BBQ contest will arrive, check-in and be escorted to
their team’s cooking site. There
will also be cooking demonstrations of authentic BBQ and parties and
entertainment throughout the day.
12:00
Teams will check-in, be assigned their cooking sites, have their KCBS contest
meats inspected and begin their preparations and cooking for the KCBS sanctioned
Surf & Turf California State Championship BBQ contest. Normal KCBS contest rules and judging standards will be
followed.
13:00
Kansas City BBQ Society Certified Judge Class;
Cost is $60 and includes one year KCBS membership.
15:00
David Klose of Klose BBQ Pits USA will conduct a public demonstration of
authentic BBQ and will BBQ a whole hog.
18:00
“Get To Know One Another” Opening
Party for Official Guests, Sponsors, Judges and participants, including a light
supper of South of the Border Mexican Cuisine. Guests will be advised of the
cost of this meal.
20:00
After party hosted bar sponsored by Klose BBQ Pits USA ending at midnight.

July 5, 2002
Judging for the Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned Surf & Turf
California State Championship BBQ contest will begin at Noon and
teams competing in the World Barbecue Championships will arrive, check-in and be
escorted to their team’s cooking site.
There will also be an Opening Ceremony, cooking demonstrations of authentic BBQ
and parties and entertainment throughout the day.
There will be a
Barbecue Expo featuring authentic BBQ equipment and demonstrations, as well as wine-tastings, food, and entertainment throughout
the day.

* Teams will be introduced, many will be in their national costumes
bearing their home country flags
and banners with their team names.
* Welcome by Rolf Zubler, President of the World Barbecue
Association, who will outline future plans and forthcoming host countries for
annual WBBQA Championships.
* Welcome by Gene Goycochea, Organizer of the
WBBQA Championships,
Imperial Beach who will present the Organizing Committee.

There will be a
Barbecue Expo featuring authentic BBQ equipment and demonstrations, teams will
be cooking their entries for the World Barbeque Championship competition, there
will also be the judging for the World Barbeque Championship competition as well
as wine-tastings, food, and
entertainment throughout the day.

Joe O’ Connell, WBBQA Judging Panel Chairman, will explain WBBQA rules to
competitors.
