1700+ Marines &
Families will be in Attendance next Saturday (12/8/07) ...
Tony McDowell coordinated the
many volunteers and food provisions coming together to make this happen.
There were 1029 pounds of Pork Shoulder Butt, BBQ Beans, twelve 24
quart braizers of Dirty Rice, Hot Dogs and other food products that will be prepared and served to the Marines and
their families by many volunteers.
We (BBQbyDan) are just a single volunteer cooking group of MANY!
Our primary responsibility in this event will be to fill
<our
pit> Friday evening with
as many Pork Butts as it can hold (about 60) and cook 72 gallons of "Dirty Rice" for the
4000+ Marines & their families. Again, we are just a small part of this
whole event as it takes many volunteers and groups to make this happen.
I will post pictures and an article at events end.

Twentynine Palms Marine
Base
May 18-19-2007
Cooking BBQ for
13,000-18,000 Marines & their dependants
Team BBQbyDan (Rick & Karen Streiff, Dan
& Barbara Cannon) head out to Twentynine Palms Marine Base to provide
support to the California BBQ Association (CBBQA) as well as many volunteers
in providing a BBQ dinner to the Marines and their dependents at the
Twentynine Palms Marine Base sports field. We will all go out on
Friday, arriving in the early afternoon to prep meats, setup smokers, and
cook the traditional award winning BBQ faire that we all do so often.
All BBQ groups and volunteers are contributing (at no charge) their
time, efforts, equipment, and fuels.
Friday evening late afternoon and evening will be dedicated to unwrapping,
trimming, and seasoning 350 full size Briskets. That would be 4,662
pounds. Yes, it takes a lot of brisket to feed 18,000 folks.
Briskets will come off the cookers early Saturday, go into warmers, then
quartered and Buffalo Chopped, then into foil pans, and into the final
warmers ready to serve for dinner. Chicken, Hamburgers, and Hot Dogs
will also be served. This is the 5th year that Team BBQbyDan has had
the privilege of being a part of this great event.
Del King is one of the originators, catalysts, and unbroken link that keeps
these events happening. He keeps the Military involved, all the
volunteers updated, events planned, and is ready on a moments notice to do
an event like this anywhere.

Team
BBQbyDan heads out today to Twentynine Palms Marine Base to assist many
other BBQ volunteers cook for the Marines and their families!
(Pre-event, 12/2/04) - BBQbyDan is just a VERY small part of
the team that has been put together through the coordination of Del King.
Del has tirelessly contributed his time and resources to make many of these
events happen over the last couple of years. This event will feed between 5000-7000 Marines and their
families during this difficult time in their lives while the base is
participating in an "Olympic type" weekend competition sporting activity.
Corporate America is contributing much of the meats while the many BBQ teams, cooks, and
volunteers are contributing their equipment, resources, and time.
(Post-event, 12/6/04) - 4,500 Marines & Families were FED day 1, Friday.
250 day 2, Saturday ...

I just want to thank all those who helped make this last Operation BBQ
For Our Troops such a success.
This was the first time the members of the Battalion had a chance to
have a family day of Battalion Picnic since they had came back from
Iraq.
They had already sent back a full company of Marines to Iraq, plus a tow
platoon and support platoon. Also deployed was over 100 Marines in
Kuwait. Within the next month they will have over 100 more men ship out
for extended duty.
